The year 2022 is critical for the large-scale development of 5G applications and the technology’s full repeated upgrade.
The subject of the 2022 World 5G Convention Media Forum, which was held both online and offline on August 9, is “5G boosts worldwide communication capability.”
At the media forum of the event, experts and professionals from domestic and international media outlets, as well as 5G tech enterprises, discussed the in-depth integration of 5G technology and international communication from the perspective of globalization, explored the direction of international communication with 5G technology in the multimedia era, and analyzed how to formulate targeted international communication strategies in accordance with the needs of international audiences.
Du Zhanyuan, Director of China International Communications Group (CICG), provided four perspectives on the future growth of 5G media and the empowerment of 5G technology, adding, “we need to establish the 5G ecosystem of international communication.”
Zhang Biyong, President of Science and Technology Daily, stated, “S&T Daily has been closely following the dynamic development of the integration of 5G technology and media, directing global media on numerous levels, dimensions, and channels. The importance of 5G in communication
Xu Zhilong, editor-in-chief of S&T Daily, stated that the development of 5G ecosystems has reached a tipping point. The structure and capabilities of media to collect and transmit information have changed as a result of the empowerment of 5G technology; hence, significant international communication strength is required to make China’s voice heard.
Zhang Jingan, director of the China Society of Science and Technology System Reform, stated, “The world requires China’s growth, and China requires the globe. It is critical to use the media to inform the rest of the world about China. It is critical to use the media to expand the friendship circle of the Belt and Road Initiative. 5G technology should be leveraged to help more foreign allies understand and support China, allowing it to become an unstoppable force for global peace and prosperity.”
Zhao Jianguo, deputy editor-in-chief of Guangming Daily, stated, “5G has created new prospects for mainstream media to transform. Artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data, and other cutting-edge technologies have established a “modern communication network on a whole new level” for news generation and dissemination. Ultra HD, 5G live streaming, and VR will drive increased transmission innovation and increase the dominance of mainstream media. With media convergence, the news chain will be indefinitely stretched by technology. All of them are useful instruments for international communication.”
Sun Shangwu, deputy editor-in-chief of China Daily, also expressed his thoughts, stating, “As journalists, we will first prioritize mobile communication and increase immediacy, allowing interactions between China and the rest of the globe to spread quicker and wider. Second, we must make our interactions more social and participatory in order to make them more approachable and accessible. Third, we should focus on visualization and make it more vivid in order to increase the activity of China-foreign exchanges.”

New international communication needs in the 5G era
Yu Yunquan, Dean of the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies, stated, “The 5G era has introduced new standards for worldwide media communication. The first step is to enhance the Internet of Things concept and increase the investigation and implementation of new platforms. Second, increase the “accuracy” of information services, particularly their planning capability. Third, accelerate the depth of integration with the technology industry to better suit the audience’s requirements.”
Targeted communication across different mediums, cultures, and languages will become the next trend in the information era.
According to Vasily Pushkov, head of International Cooperation at Sputnik News Agency and Radio, “The epidemic of COVID-19 demonstrated the critical role that new technologies play in international communications and information exchange. Online engagement forms are fast evolving; virtual international events bring together thousands of people from all over the world, and bilateral online encounters with partners have become commonplace.”
According to Zhao Sha, PR Newswire’s China Media Development Director, “People in the media sector are paying more attention to audience statistics. The growth in the number of views, shares, likes, and videos watched has a direct impact on the whole industry.”
5G facilitates the future media business
According to Emilio Saldaa, the head of science and technology at Mexico’s TV channel 22, “The rapid transmission and ultra-low latency of 5G technology will transform the digital media sector, notably in two areas: news collection and delivery. 5G technology has the potential to increase our journalists’ capacity to record-breaking news and deliver media products in a timely manner. We will continue to refine the distribution and experience of news in the digital world as 5G technology becomes more widely available.”
From the standpoint of 5G application technology, forum attendees from Huawei, Tencent, ZTE, and Qualcomm also commented on the different channels and methods that technology can assist increase international communication capacity, as well as explained the multi-sensory experience of immersive news.
